Promoting user-centred design

Rob McGregor is the name behind InfoCLEAR Consulting. A document designer and researcher with over 15 years consulting experience, Rob launched InfoCLEAR in 1994. Rob lives in Sydney, Australia.

Working collaboratively

Often the best designs arise from close collaboration between people whose expertise is in different but complementary disciplines.

Rob really enjoys the opportunity to operate as part of a dedicated design team. 'If you work at working together, both the process and the outcome can be richly rewarding'. Whatever the scope of his role, Rob's aim is to help design documents that reflect his defining passions: clarity, usability and impact.

Staying up-to-date

Rob brings a strong academic background to his consulting work. He studied Linguistics at Macquarie University, Sydney (MA Hons) and later, at the University of Exeter, UK, he studied how children acquire and develop writing skills (M.Ed).

Rob is a member of the Design Management Institute, based in Boston, USA. 'Professional reading is just part of the job', says Rob. 'One fringe benefit of working in user-centered document design and plain English is the journals are generally very readable!'

Getting a life

Rob reckons that the system (chief culprit—tax) seems to be turning us all into workaholics.

When he's not working Rob is either catching up with his workaholic family, gardening (camellias), giving his photos a digital makeover in Photoshop, going to classical music concerts or the theatre, or watching rugby (go the Wallabies!).
